Read through Jesus’ teachings on the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7. As you read, ponder the following questions:
Matthew 5:1-12: How do people describe me? How does God look at people, compared to the way the world sees people?
Matthew 5:13-16: How do I view evangelism? How could I be more intentional to share the Good News with people around me?
Matthew 5:17-20: What is the relationship between Jesus and the law? Do I try to make myself righteous?
Matthew 5:21-48: How do the teachings of Jesus differ from the Jewish culture? How do the teachings of Jesus differ from our culture today? Which of these teachings are most difficult for you to live out? How would the world view followers of Christ if we all followed these teachings?
Matthew 6:1-18: What is most surprising to you about Jesus’ teachings on giving, praying, and fasting? Which one of these is most difficult for you? Ask the Spirit to teach you humility and submission in each of these areas to deepen your relationship with God.
Matthew 6:19-24: Am I living out these verses as a follower of Christ? What is the Spirit asking of me through this passage?
Matthew 6:25-34: Is it easier to worry about my life, or trust God for my daily needs? What does it look like in my life to truly seek the Kingdom of God before all else? Holy Spirit, show me how to trust you more fully.
Matthew 7:1-6: How do I respond when others seek to correct me? Lord, help me to see myself and others clearly, as you see them!
Matthew 7:7-12: Do I trust God is a perfect Heavenly Father waiting to give good gifts? Why is it so easy to only ask God to give me good gifts, why do I not also pray for others with the same fervor?
Matthew 7:13-23: What fruit is God producing in me? Jesus, what do you desire to grow in me? Is pruning work required before that can happen? Lord, help me to not serve you, or seek signs from you, without seeking deep relationship with you!
Matthew 7:24-29: Is it easier to apply the teachings of scripture to my life, or not read it at all? When Jesus looks at my life, does he describe me as foolish or wise based on this passage? Am I amazed at the teachings of Jesus, or do I think I know it all? Do the teachings of Jesus have authority in my life?
